Intellectual Disability, Trauma and Psychotherapy

This new book, published by Routledge, focuses on the delivery of psychotherapy services for those with intellectual disabilities.  Its twelve chapters are written by leading specialist psychotherapists who work at Respond.  They describe the history, theory and practice (whether face to face or by the use of telephone counselling) of over a decade of work at Respond, a service for people with intellectual disabilities based in central London.  
The chapters draw on the work of psychotherapists including Bion, Winnicott, Sinason and Alvarez.  
Topics covered include:

• Therapeutic responses to cultural and religious diversity
• Support for parents with intellectual disabilities
• Developing healthy and secure attachments within the family Dealing with intense feelings of shame
• Helping clients to cope with traumatic sexual experiences

Dementia and People with Learning DISABILITIES

This invaluable training pack has been devised by Respond in partnership with the GOLD Group – a group of older people with learning disabilities who have been working together for the last decade on helping others to understand what it means to grow older with a learning disability.  Respond is grateful to CSIP and Valuing People for their support in developing this pack.

The focus for this training pack is the importance of supporting relationships for people with learning disabilities who develop dementia. It has been designed primarily with the staff team of a residential home in mind as the central users but is flexible for other training situations. Individual information cards can be copied and used as handouts or acetates or to plan teaching sessions. The action cards can be used as the basis for small group exercises.

The pack is bound in an A5 ring binder file and contains:

• Two different types of training cards – information cards and action cards. All cards are laminated.
• 2 DVDs – The original GOLD video which covers aspects of growing older with a learning disability and ‘Forget me Not’ a play about dementia from the perspective of people with learning disabilities. The play has been devised and performed by the GOLD group.

Loss & Learning Disability

Noelle Blackman:  (Worth Publishing, November 2003)

The emotional life of people with learning disabilities is a subject that has only begun to be thought about in the last decade.  This important book addresses the issue of how people with learning disabilities can be affected by loss and bereavement of all kinds.  It includes pro-active strategies to prevent grief complications and therapeutic interventions for helping people when the grief process “goes wrong”.

Caring for People with Learning Disabilities who are Dying

The majority of people with learning disabilities are likely to die whilst living in a service setting.  This invaluable book, written by two leading practitioners in the field, will raise the awareness of everyone involved in enabling people with learning disabilities to be treated with respect and dignity as they approach death.  Full of practical advice, the book can be used by service managers to assess how well their services are currently prepared for this important phase in their clients’ lives, with a view to developing policies based on good practice.

Witnessing, Nurturing, Protesting

This book focuses on the long term consequences of sexual abuse experienced by people with learning disabilities and highlights practical and creative responses that facilitate healing and recovery.  It draws on the experiences of Respond, a therapeutic service for people with learning disabilities who have experienced trauma or abuse.  The authors use case examples to illustrate models of therapy practice.  The book provides professionals, parents and carers working in this field with insights into the subject, along with strategies and ideas for support and working creatively.
