NO MORE SECRETS, NO MORE aBUSE- ANTI ABUSE CHARITIES WELCOME REVIEW OF ADULT PROTECTION GUIDANCE

Anti-abuse charities the Ann Craft Trust and Respond have welcomed the Government’s announcement of a review of adult protection guidance as an important step towards preventing the abuse of vulnerable adults.

“Today’s announcement on the level of elder abuse shows the shocking level of abuse of vulnerable adults and hints at how society has failed them” stated Richard Curen, Director of Respond.  “Yet much abuse of vulnerable adults is hidden, particularly of people with learning disabilities.  We would like to thank the Government for this review of the No Secrets guidance.  There must be no more secrets about abuse and this review can bring abuse more into the open.”

“The recent cases of abuse of vulnerable adults in care in Cornwall and at Sutton and Merton PCT show the urgent need to reinvigorate adult protection arrangements” said Deborah Kitson, Director of the Ann Craft Trust.  “There is good practice out there, but there is also far too much bad practice.  This review gives us a chance to learn what works and use it to stop abuse of vulnerable adults.  We welcome it.”

“We work daily with people with learning disabilities who have suffered the most appalling abuse and we know all too well the trauma abuse inflicts” continued Curen.  “With this review we can work together with Government and other agencies to tackle this problem.”
